GHSC Columbus Day Tournament
October 12-13, 2002
Destiny Victorious!
The McLean Destiny won the Greater Harford Columbus Day
Tournament October 12-13, 2002. The Destiny defeated the North Carroll
Scorpions and the Greater Harford Raptors by scores of 3-1 and 2-0
respectively to earn a place in the tournament finals, after a team from New
Jersey dropped out due to the sniper shootings.

The championship game was played against the Columbia
Comets, a team that had scored 15 goals in three games to win its bracket of
the division. After a scoreless first half, the Destiny took the lead with
10 minutes remaining on a long shot by midfielder Katie. The game was
clinched in the final minute when Bobbie broke through the defense to
provide the finishing touch to a 2-0 victory. The shutout was particularly
remarkable against an opponent that had demonstrated its ability to score so
many goals.
The three tournament victories were a welcomed relief from a
WAGS season marked by 5 ties in 6 games. The Destiny was finally able to add
a potent attack to its strong defense and midfield play. Ashley (3 goals),
Bobbie (2 goals), Caity (1 goal) and Katie (1 goal) provided the team's 7
goals. Goalkeeper Kathleen and defenders Natalie, Kathryn, Caitlin,
Sandy, Kara and Allison led the team's formidable defense. Tara, Lissie,
Colleen, Katrien and Alexa were outstanding at forward and midfield
positions.
